Welcome to Thunder Hunter Storm Photography. Here you
will find my
images of the power, beauty
& colour of the severe storms that visit the Great Plains of
the USA each Spring.
The Great Plains are a vast expanse of flat prairie which
lies east of the Rocky Mountains and spans the country from
north to south, covering the mid-west states of New Mexico,
Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming,
Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota. Collectively,
these states are home to some of the most intense
thunderstorms on earth known as supercells. These
gigantic storms occur most often in a region of the Plains
known as Tornado Alley, and they pack a punch with massive
hail, extraordinary lightning, torrential rain and the
strongest winds on earth - the tornado.
I have travelled to Tornado Alley three years running to
witness the spectacle and capture high quality digital
images and video. I have been lucky enough to chase
with experienced chasers from all over the world, including
one of Australia's most experienced and successful, as well
as some of the best American chasers who have appeared in
television documentaries and the like.
I have witnessed massive supercells rotating in the sky,
monstrous green ice-laden beasts eating up the land, turning
day into night, flattening the land with softball size hail
and lightning displays that defy description. The
adrenalin rush is amazing, but as good as these experiences
are, the main event is the tornado!
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in
contact with the cloud base and the ground surface.
They can can take on many shapes and sizes and contain the
strongest winds on earth - the most violent tornado has
winds in excess of 200mph! The strongest ever wind
speed in a tornado was recorded on May 3rd 1999 when a
deadly tornado hit Oklahoma City with winds of 318mph.
I have been lucky enough to witness tornadoes in Oklahoma,
Kansas, South Dakota and Texas but I've also had the
sobering experience of seeing the aftermath of two deadly
tornadoes, including the 2.5 mile-wide wedge tornado that
destroyed the town of Greensburg, Kansas on May 4, 2007.
